Demand the Milwaukee Health Department Shut Down All In-Person Schools

Milwaukee Health Department and Mayor Barrett

The City of Milwaukee's Covid-19 positivity rate is increasing at an alarming rate, surpassing 19.1% last week (up from 14.7% the week prior). The city's contact tracing is completely overwhelmed (at least 2,400 cases behind) and Milwaukee's Health Commissioner has yet to act on schools, repeating they are “safe" to the Common Council and Milwaukee School Board. This opinion is based on very limited evidence (self-reporting of private schools and limited contact tracing) and ignores numerous scientific studies saying otherwise.

Thanksgiving is next week and the current spike seems almost certain to worsen after the holiday. The City of Racine Public Health Department has now stepped up to close all schools from Thanksgiving until January 15th. We demand the Milwaukee Health Department act immediately to close schools and take other necessary steps to slow the uncontrolled spread of the virus in Milwaukee.
