Don’t Bail Out Coal

President Trump & The US Department of Energy

Since January, the Trump administration has enacted the most dangerous and expensive anti-environment Polluters’ First agenda in history. It has attacked standards that limit climate and other air pollution, undermined lifesaving protections against extreme weather, eliminated investments in clean energy, and bent over backwards to prop up dirty and expensive coal power, all while your electricity bill has skyrocketed

The Trump administration doubled down on coal by taking a slew of actions, including opening 13.1 million acres of public lands for coal leases, reconsidering air and water regs for coal power plants, and announcing $625 million in fossil fuel power plant bailouts. Under the guise of an emergency, the administration directed utilities to keep previously retiring coal power plants online, costing ratepayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

We know that coal is bad for our health, our environment, and our electricity bills; that’s why we stand firmly against coal bailouts.

Coal is not only bad for our environment, but it’s bad for our pocketbooks. Coal is the dirtiest, most polluting fuel in our energy mix.

Renewable energy, like solar and wind, is cost-competitive and comes without all the power plant pollution. Solar energy is the cheapest and quickest source of energy we can build to meet the growing demand for electricity. And, renewable energy has delivered $300 billion in health benefits, which is money in our pockets and our families protected from dirty air and water.

President Trump wants to open up our federal lands to coal mining, hurting local economies and our health. On top of that, the Trump administration is forcing coal plants to stay online after their retirement dates, costing us millions in higher electricity bills and increased pollution.

That’s why we stand firmly against coal bailouts.

We want cheaper, safer, cleaner, and more job-creating energy sources like solar and wind. President Trump wants to let billionaires make more money and pollute our environment by keeping these coal plants open. It’s time to move on from dirty, expensive coal-fired power plants in favor of more efficient, affordable, and profitable clean energy.
