Tell Northeastern University School of Law to drop ICE as a Collecting Co-op Employer

Northeastern University School of Law

For the past few years, we have seen ICE carry out immigration policies that have been criticized by the UN as counter to international human rights standards and principles. We have seen ICE separating families at the border to deter migrants from entering the United States while actively contributing to the mass and often indefinite detention of migrants within our borders. For this reason, any collaboration with or support of this agency at this time would be unethical and immoral.

NUSL has touted itself as a global institution whose values are grounded in global justice and human rights. Providing support to the agency by offering NUSL students as potential interns through the collecting co-op service is not a policy grounded in global justice. That is why it is important that we demand that the university drop ICE as a collecting co-op employer as soon as possible.

Dear Northeastern University School of Law Administration:

As members of the NUSL community, we are deeply troubled by and stand firmly against listing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a Collecting Co-Op Employer. Particularly during this historical moment, where ICE is visibly and systematically separating children from parents, enforcing the caging of families, and generally terrorizing communities of immigrants seeking lawful asylum, we cannot stand by silently and accept this endorsement of ICE activities by the Co-Op office. Many of us are children of immigrants, if not immigrants ourselves. Others of us are fierce allies for the rights and dignity of immigrants, as our neighbors and community members.

ICE has carried out immigration policies that have been criticized by the UN as counter to international human rights standards and principles. As is cited countless times by NUSL’s communications department, admissions outreach, and Co-Op office: NUSL is well-known as one of the top public interest law schools in the nation. This is truly what sets NUSL apart from other law schools, and for many of us, was the driving factor in our highly competitive decision to attend this institution to learn about the law and justice. Listing ICE as a Collecting Co-Op Employer stands in stark contrast to this focus.

We demand that Northeastern University School of Law drop ICE as a collecting co-op employer.
