New Lakeview Dog Park

Our City Aldermen

There are a lot of dogs in our neighborhood! Leave your home and you will pass several dog walkers within any given block. Walk on the lakefront and dogs are everywhere, often running off-leash. At the corner of Belmont Harbor, there is a small dog beach. But this area is not only insufficient in size to accommodate the incredible number of dogs in East Lakeview, it is also filthy. Due to its location, chemical residues from the harbored boats create a slick on the surface and trash piles up. In addition, the ramp is often submerged.

It's simple. Anyone can readily observe that East Lakeview has more than enough dogs to justify a real dog park. Here are some of the benefits:

  1. Dogs could go off-leash while staying safe while not causing a nuisance.
  2. We'll stop tripping over each other just trying to walk down the street because there will be a better place to walk than just going in circles around the neighborhood.
  3. Dog parks foster community - it's true! The same people meet up regularly and get to know each other.
  4. Dogs spending more time in a designated area with other dogs and other dog owners means less dog waste everywhere.

Dear Alderman Tunney,

In 2018, 43,000 dogs were registered in Chicago, and that number increases year-over-year as the population of East Lakeview continues to grow.

We’re asking for your help to make the community more safe, healthy, and attractive to all park users by creating an accessible dog park in East Lakeview. We have filed an application with Chicago Park District for a dog park at the 3000 North (Inner) Lake Shore Drive.

Currently, there is a dog beach at Belmont Harbor which has become too small to
accommodate the number of dogs in our community. More importantly, this area is often flooded and is a reservoir of chemical residue and other trash from the nearby harbored boats - a health and safety issue for humans and canines alike.

Benefits of a nearby non-beach dog park include:

• Reduce congestion and potential collisions on area sidewalks and running/biking trails

• Corral dogs in a central location where they are not disturbing other areas and users of the park

• Provide a safe, fenced area with a water source for owners to exercise and socialize their dogs

Alderman, please lend your support to help us make this happen! Thank you!
