Eid Break on the Detroit Public Schools Calendar
Detroit Public Schools Community District
Christians - how would you feel if you woke up one day and found out you have to go to school on Christmas? This is the reality for many Muslim students attending Detroit Public Schools. Despite years of education and advocacy, DPSCD still doesn't include the Eid holidays on their school calendar.
Eid is a very important holiday for Muslims across the world. It's a time for families and communities to be together, give gifts, reflect on their faith, and try to improve themselves to be closer to God. Muslims feel gratitude, peace, and joy during this holiday, similar to Christmas for Christians.
This is not a trivial or symbolic issue. There are significant numbers of Muslim students in Detroit Public Schools, and two school districts which border Detroit, Hamtramck and Dearborn, have successfully integrated Eid on the calendar with no negative consequences.
MIStudentsDream youth organizers are hoping to get Eid on the school calendar starting in the 2026-2027 school year. In order to do this, we need to show popular support for this calendar change. Students, parents, educators, faith leaders -- we need your help! Please sign our petition and share it with your friends, family and colleagues to show that Detroiters of all backgrounds support this initiative. Help us make Detroit schools a diverse and safe environment for all students.
