For decades, men and women in Louisiana were convicted even though one or two jurors did not agree with the verdict. This practice - rooted in the Jim Crow Era - is deeply unjust. Louisiana was the only state in the South using this offensive and immoral process.

In 2018, Louisiana voters passed a constitutional amendment to put an end to this racist practice. In 2020 the United States Supreme Court ruled that these non-unanimous jury verdicts are unconstitutional. As important and historic as these decisions were in remedying the harm, they only applied to future cases. Today, hundreds of people remain in prison in Louisiana - convicted decades ago - as a result of unconstitutional non-unanimous jury verdicts.

Only the Louisiana Legislature has the power to address this injustice, and we call on you to do just that. We ask that you support legislation that will provide new constitutional trials to every person convicted with a non-unanimous jury who remains incarcerated today.
