End ticket scams - support fair ticketing in NY

NY State Legislature and Governor

The "secondary" ticket market has tormented fans and artists for too long. Fans and consumers are often locked out of tickets at initial on-sale and forced to turn to resale platforms which can be many multiples of the price the artist intended. Brokers use deceptive URLs, paid advertisements, and unauthorized venue, festival, and artist imagery to make consumers think they are buying from the source. Resellers are known to sell "spec" tickets to shows that haven't gone on sale and tickets that don't actually exist.

New York concertgoers deserve a ticket marketplace that is fair, transparent, and safe—one where real fans are prioritized over bots, speculators, and scammers. Today’s ticketing system too often drives up prices, misleads consumers, and makes live music less accessible for the very people who support it.

I'm adding my voice to Fan Alliance's message to New York State lawmakers to enact the following legislative fixes to restore affordability and fairness in the concert ticket market:

• Cap resale prices at face value plus reasonable fee. The easiest way to end scalping and profiteering is by capping the price of resale tickets. Fans should not be subjected to extreme markups simply for wanting to attend a show.

• Ban speculative ticketing. It should be illegal to list or advertise tickets unless the seller is verified to possess the ticket. Selling tickets that they don't own or may not yet exist puts fans at risk of showing up empty handed and distorts prices.

• Prohibit deceptive URLs and fake venue or artist websites. Websites that mimic the name, branding, or likeness of artists or venues—and mislead fans into purchasing marked-up resale tickets—must be banned.

• Ensure full transparency of fees. Hidden fees inflate prices and obscure the true cost of tickets. Fans deserve clear, reasonable, and transparent pricing.

• Guarantee timely refunds. When a show is canceled, resellers must issue refunds within two weeks. Fans should not be left waiting months—or indefinitely—for their money to be returned.

Live performance is a vital part of New York’s cultural life. These commonsense reforms would protect fans, discourage predatory practices, and help ensure that concerts remain accessible to the people who love them most.
