By underspending on students, the Sacramento City Unified School District has ended 9 out of the last 10 years with a surplus. The SCUSD reserve fund is $103 million, the highest in its history. SCUSD has also received an additional $313 million in federal and state COVID funds to improve services to students.
• A 5-Year Wage Freeze, with $9000 Per Year Cut in Educator Take-home Pay: But Superintendent Jorge Aguilar, with the support of the school board, is demanding that educators accept a five-year wage freeze and an average $9000 per year cut in their take-home pay through health insurance takeaways.
• A 17.5% Salary Increase for Mr. Aguilar: During the same five-year period, Mr. Aguilar’s pay will increase by 17.5% bringing his total compensation to over $450,000 per year.
• 6000 Students Per Day Without an Assigned, Regular Teacher, Another 2500 Students Per Day Without Even a Substitute Teacher: Every day, 6000 students are being taught by substitute teachers, rather than regularly-assigned staff. Even worse, an additional 2500 students do not even have a substitute available. Educators are leaving the District, in response to SCUSD’s unwillingness to work with classified and certificated staff.
• Hundreds of Students Waiting for Independent Study: And an additional 600 students who are unable to return to in-person classes can’t enroll in Independent Study because there aren’t enough teachers.
Every Sac City student deserves to have a fully credentialed teacher in the classroom who reflects the rich diversity of our District.
“Equity, Access and Social Justice” should be more than a slogan.
By signing below, we are urging the School Board to move in a different direction—make our students a priority by working with educators, not against them.
