Stop Evictions, Save Lives

Carl Heastie, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Andrew Cuomo

In 2020 we fought to stop evictions because we know that keeping people in their homes saves lives. But as New York starts to reopen, millions of people are once again at risk of losing their homes while 92,000 New Yorkers remain homeless.

New York must extend the eviction moratorium until the end of the pandemic + 180 days. But we need more than that:

COVID-19 caused an economic crisis, and in order to recover, tenants and homeless New Yorkers have to be empowered to reclaim their homes. Recovery means investment in permanent rental assistance for low income New Yorkers and New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. It means community and family stability that permanent eviction protections can provide.

As the eviction moratorium expires, Speaker Carl Heastie, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Governor Andrew Cuomo must pass Good Cause Eviction (S3082/A5573) and the Housing Access Voucher Program (S2804A/A2701) to give New Yorkers the right to reclaim their homes and put our state on the path to a strong and just recovery from COVID-19.

Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Governor Cuomo:

Over the last year, the state legislature has prevented countless evictions with the Eviction Moratorium, recognizing that stopping evictions saves lives. But as our state begins to reopen, millions of people will once again be at risk of losing their homes while 92,000 New Yorkers remain homeless.

New York MUST extend the eviction moratorium until the end of the pandemic +180 days after. But that is not enough to fully recover from the pandemic.

New York’s recovery from COVID-19 must include the passage Good Cause Eviction and the Housing Access Voucher Program. Without it, our state may recover for the wealthy and privileged but not for working class and poor New Yorkers.

Help us reclaim our homes and set our state on a path toward a strong and just recovery. Pass Good Cause and the Housing Access Voucher Program this session.
