The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is asking the public to comment on its Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for expanded plutonium pit production—a proposal that would shape U.S. nuclear weapons production for decades.

The Draft PEIS would guide plutonium pit production through at least 2075, with significant implications for surrounding communities, Tribal Nations, workers, environmental resources, public health, and federal spending. A decision of this magnitude deserves a review process that is transparent, scientifically complete, and fully informed.

Three nonprofit organizations—Savannah River Site Watch, Tri-Valley CAREs, and Nuclear Watch New Mexico—represented by the South Carolina Environmental Law Project, have requested that NNSA publicly release three critical documents that they argue are directly relevant to the Draft PEIS and the public's ability to provide informed comments.

These documents include:

• A new independent JASON study evaluating the expected lifespan of plutonium pits.
• A Department of Energy Special Study examining leadership and management of the plutonium pit production program.
• An updated Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis for Los Alamos National Laboratory, which the Draft PEIS anticipated would be completed.

Without access to these documents, the public cannot fully evaluate key assumptions regarding the need for expanded plutonium pit production, project management, facility safety, and environmental risks.

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) exists to ensure informed decision-making through transparency and meaningful public participation. That process depends on the public having access to relevant information before comment periods close.

We therefore urge the National Nuclear Security Administration to:

1. Release the unclassified versions or summaries of the three requested documents as soon as possible.
2. Extend the public comment period for the Draft Pit Production Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement by at least 30 days after these documents are publicly released.
3. Ensure that the final PEIS fully considers and responds to the information contained in these documents before making any final decisions.

This request is not about delaying public participation—it is about making public participation meaningful.

The decisions made through this PEIS could influence nuclear weapons production, environmental protection, worker safety, community health, Tribal cultural resources, and taxpayer investments for decades. Americans deserve a transparent process based on the best available information.
