Opportunities Peoples Justice Leaders are raising awareness concerning improper ventilation inside Ohio prisons. Which is causing excessive temperatures that can be life-threatening. We are extremely concerned for the entire population. Especially the elderly, people with underlined health conditions, people on psychotropic medication, and those in solitary confinement. Our Organization has received hundreds of complaints concerning the excessive heat, no fresh air coming in and out, cockroaches, and rats that are adding up to the heat issues. The heat inside is twice the amount of the heat outside the prisons. Due to lack of air ventilation. This is a clear violation of incarcerated peoples' 8th amendment rights which states Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” We the people constituents and taxpayers of the state of Ohio. Demand that every City, each facility is housing in. Follow the same heat plan protocol that is in place for civilian residents. That this same heat plan applies to the incarcerated residents in their City. Which could consist of the following per City Ordinance across the states. We the people, constituents, and taxpayers of the state of Ohio demand that ODRC releases its heat plan to the public. As well as an answer to the following demands. We are requesting a 24 hr response to this letter. Concerning the danger that 50 thousand incarcerated people are being placed in, and how swiftly resolve.

Here is the request as follows for every Mayor and City council member that houses any of the 28 correctional facilities in Ohio:

  • Portable cooling centers are set up at each facility.

  • Iced

  • Bottled Water

We the people constituents and taxpayers feel as though this is an emergency situation and should be treated accordingly.

We want the ODRC to provide safety measures and relief for the incarcerated individual such as:

  • Unlimited access to Ice

  • Clean Cold Drinking Water

  • Miniature Fans

  • Industrial Fans

  • Possible emergency release of those who have 6 months or less on their sentence or TC (Transitional Control)

  • Assisting local governments such as Mayors, and City councils with providing portable cooling center on the ground of each facility.

  • Extermination of the roaches, mice, and any other vermin.

About OPJL: Opportunities Peoples Justice Leaders established The Fan Project in 2020. Sparked by our advocacy efforts concerning Covid-19 in Ohio's Prisons. Through our efforts, we discovered that prison cells reach alarming temperatures of 109 degrees or more During the summer months. Furthermore, we found that a small fan would make a difference for over 50,000 person population. To date, we have placed over 800 Fans through our annual fundraiser.
