HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND RESEARCHERS: DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM HOSPITALS AND UNIVERSITIES

Hospital and University Leadership and Administration

Science, healthcare, and academic freedom are under attack by the Trump administration and its proxies. Public health institutions have been forced to shed essential personnel, losing years of training, risking the loss of irreplaceable knowledge, and placing millions at risk from outbreaks of preventable diseases. The designation of healthcare facilities and educational institutions as sites of immigration enforcement has created a culture of fear that keeps people from obtaining needed medical care or attending school. Federal grants have been hand-picked for termination based on discriminatory and anti-science ideologies surrounding LGBTQIA+ health, structural racism, vaccines, and environmental science. Long-overdue efforts to encourage a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce across higher education have been slashed. Federal funding has been weaponized to punish institutions that maintain free speech and inclusive policies. The medical care of patients, in particular Veterans and those on Medicaid, is threatened by huge funding cuts.

The Trump administration and its agents have created a climate of repression and retaliation that intimidates responsible leaders. Acceding to this interference violates our ethical imperative to care for all and first, do no harm. Without a unified voice from universities and hospitals across the country, we risk losing the institutions that are essential for patient care, innovation, scientific discovery, and medical advancement. Neutrality and focus on self-preservation pose dire threats to us as individuals, to our institutions, and to our democracy.

As alumni, staff, faculty, and trainees, we call upon our leadership to:

  1. Form a coalition with other universities and healthcare institutions to direct political, public relations, and legal resources to firmly reject attacks on the core values of academic freedom, free speech, equity, and democracy.

  2. Protect all patients, students, staff, trainees, and faculty from improper government interference.

  3. Commit to providing patient-centered care for all according to the best available data.

  4. Resist government pressure that seeks to remove our colleagues and eliminate their transformative science.

History has taught us that acquiescence to authoritarian policies does not prevent suffering. If you speak with a unified voice and decisively defend what is sacred and under threat, we will proudly stand with you and in defense of you. Our patients, our science, and our country urgently need your leadership.
