Fair Funding, No Fare Hikes!

Governor Cuomo

Amid deteriorating service the MTA is considering yet another fare hike on riders, the third since 2012. We know furthering burdening riders fails to adequately or justly provide the necessary funding to repair our transit system. We are calling on Governor Cuomo to nix any idea of a fare hike and instead implement a comprehensive funding plan, built around congestion pricing, to finally #FixTheSubway.

Dear Governor Cuomo:

Warning of deep cuts to service amid a growing financial crises, the MTA is considering yet again raising fares on riders. Since 2012, the MTA hiked fares three times while train delays more than tripled. With each fare hike, riders have paid more and gotten less. What our transit system really needs is for state leaders to enact a robust funding plan, with congestion pricing at its core, to modernize the subway. Only a funding plan that recognizes the inherent value of transit to all New Yorkers will get riders moving reliably.

At a time when we are debating how to equitably fund our transit system, we know that regressive fare hikes that disproportionately target working people just won’t do. Under our broken transit system, workers are struggling with showing up late to their jobs and missing hours. Low income neighborhoods already have the least reliable service. Late passes from the MTA are no substitute for a functioning affordable transit system.

We demand that you put a halt to this year's fare hike now. It’s time for a funding plan that puts riders first. It’s time to #FixTheSubways!
