Tell the World Bank: Fund Just Clean Energy for a Livable Planet
The World Bank
The World Bank has an ambitious mission: Create a world free of poverty on a livable planet.
So why is the bank still pumping billions into fossil fuel projects driving climate change and ecological destruction? With unfair loans leaving nations drowning in debt and trapped in poverty?
It’s time for the bank to honor its mission.
This means ending ALL funding for fossil fuels. It means supporting just clean energy projects with fair financing that create jobs, dignity, and opportunity for millions worldwide.
That’s how we create a livable planet. The World Bank can help us do it.
Tell the World Bank: Honor your mission. Stop funding fossil fuels and fund just clean energy for a livable planet.

The World Bank Group has an ambitious and admirable mission: Create a world free of poverty on a livable planet.
Today, with climate change threatening to pull 100 million people or more into poverty by 2030, we’re calling on you to honor this mission by supporting the just clean energy transition critical to halting rising temperatures and averting the worst of climate devastation.
With the WBG’s spring meeting approaching, we urge you to use this opportunity to advance reforms on two key fronts.
1. Stop funding fossil fuels
As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has repeatedly said, any new fossil fuel development could lock us into warming beyond 1.5 degrees, inviting increasingly destructive heat, storms, and more that inevitably hit the poorest hardest.
We can do better. The WBG must end all funding for any fossil fuel projects worldwide. This means formally prohibiting borrowers from using all kinds of bank and trade financing to support any coal, oil, or gas development.
2. Fund just clean energy for a livable planet
Today, renewables like wind and solar are increasingly the cheapest form of new electricity worldwide, enabling more and more nations to grow their economies without destroying the planet.
The benefits don’t end there. In the US, clean energy investments have advanced hundreds of thousands of jobs, while new reporting shows that clean energy transition could create 3.3 million jobs by 2030 in Africa alone.
It’s time for the WBG to seize the moment and fund just clean energy solutions that help Global South nations rapidly cut emissions while creating jobs and strong economies. All with fair financing – grants and low-cost loans – so countries can grow without dangerous debt traps and crippling repayments.
By shifting investments from fossil fuels to clean energy, the WBG can inspire other financial institutions and nations worldwide to follow suit and help us stop rising temperatures and create a future of prosperity for all.
This is the critical decade for action and the clock is ticking. We’re calling on the WBG to do its part and fulfill its mission.
Stop funding fossil fuels. Fund just clean energy for a livable planet.
