Vancouver Granville Demands a Stop to the Genocide in Gaza! Real Ceasefire Now!

We continue to watch Israel’s indiscriminate bombing and ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in horror. Over 29,000 Palestinians have been murdered by a genocidal regime in the last five months, of which at least 12,000 are children. Tens of thousands more are missing or buried in the rubble. Half of Gaza’s 2.3M population are starving, and hundreds of thousands are facing disease as the weather has turned cold.

Every poll has shown that the majority of people in Canada support a permanent ceasefire. But instead of listening to us, Canada is profiting from genocide by participating in the sale and purchase of weapons with the Israeli regime whose stated goal is to “erase the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth”.*

There is a growing movement in our Vancouver-Granville neighbourhood calling on our MP Taleeb Noormohamed to do what we all know is right. He needs to tell:

  • Prime Minister Trudeau to do everything in his power to stop these atrocities; and
  • Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly to impose an immediate and public arms embargo on Israel.

As a resident of Vancouver-Granville, will you join your neighbours to demand an end to Canada’s complicity in genocide?

I am a resident of Vancouver-Granville and I am horrified by the atrocities and loss of life occurring daily in the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people by Israel. For over 200 days, Gaza has been subjected to an indiscriminate Israeli bombing campaign and ground invasion that has killed over 29,000 Palestinians, of which at least 12,000 are children.

This crisis has starkly revealed your failure to act on my concerns – which reflect the majority of people in Canada – and your response will influence my choices, including how I vote, donate, and volunteer in the next federal election.

I urge you to do everything in your power to bring about an immediate and permanent ceasefire by ending Canada’s complicity in Israel’s genocidal campaign including:

1. Demand an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire;
2. Demand the lifting of Israel’s siege on Gaza;
3. End arms sales to Israel; and
4. Reinstate funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)

According to public records, Canada approved $28.5M worth of military exports to Israel between October and December 2023. This means that Canada approved more exports in military goods to Israel in just the first three months of their genocidal campaign against Gaza than in any single year over the last 30 years.

Canada also continues to buy weapons and weapon components, that Israel has developed to carry out the genocide that we’re witnessing today. This is direct Canadian complicity, and it must end now.

In the last five months, while enduring the ongoing genocide, 85% of Gazans, over 1.9 million people, have been displaced. Three-quarters of the homes in Gaza have been destroyed, as have most hospitals, schools, and religious sites.

Canada finally voted for a ceasefire at the United Nations after millions of Canadians spoke up, but Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberal Party continue to support Israel’s campaign of brutality. Every Member of Parliament, including you, has a role to play in ending this genocide.

MP Noormohamed, you must call for an end to Canadian complicity in Israeli aggression and demand a ceasefire, a 2-way arms embargo and an end to the siege on Gaza.

The majority of your constituents are calling on you to do so. I am certain that community members are reaching out to you in various ways and losing faith in your humanity and sense of justice. We ask YOU to be vocal in your support for a ceasefire in Parliament, over social media, and with traditional media.

I will continue to speak up and leverage my voice to enact real change. Come election time, I will make sure that my vote, and those of my community, reflect upon your actions, or lack thereof, in this time of global crisis. This is a test of all our humanity, and we need you to rise to the occasion.
