Truck drivers and owner-operators are facing low wages, wage theft, harassment, and unsafe working conditions on the job. These problems are getting worse, while the government continues to ignore driver concerns. Why aren’t you protecting drivers?

We are demanding change now! Drivers are the backbone of our economy and deserve better. We are calling for stronger laws and better enforcement to ensure that drivers and owner-operators get the wages, safe working conditions, and respect that they deserve.

Truck drivers and owner-operators need:

1. Guaranteed minimum pay rates for drivers and owner operators

- Set pay rates for drivers and owner-operators that are fair and reflect operating costs.

- Ensure strong enforcement across the industry to prevent employer competition from driving down wages, safety standards and working conditions.

2. No unpaid work, no late pay

- Pay for all kilometers and miles driven.

- Pay for all hours spent on non-driving tasks such as border delays, layovers, inspections, maintenance, etc.

- Make sure drivers are paid on time.

3. End wage theft in the trucking industry

- Real consequences for employers who break the law and deny paying wages.

- Close loopholes that allow employers to not pay workers.

- Strengthen enforcement through faster processing of Canada Labour Code complaints and stronger collection powers.

- Require employers to pay interest on stolen wages.

4. Protect drivers, hold employers accountable

- Establish an anonymous complaint mechanism to report employer violations with strong enforcement powers.

- Ensure drivers can refuse unsafe or illegal work without risking their jobs.

- Penalize employers for misclassification, not drivers.

- Make employers, subcontractors, and other layered business arrangements equally responsible (jointly liable) for driver safety and working conditions.

5. Invest in better infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of drivers and the public

- Improve road conditions.

- Increase the quality and availability of rest areas.

- Increase the number of parking spots.

This is an urgent request for action. We look forward to an expedited response and concrete next steps.
