“My name is Ali Saqib. I have been detained for 16 months and my case is still pending. I do not have an attorney and my briefing is still pending too. I came to the United States looking for asylum, but instead I was detained and now face deportation.

Since being detained at NWDC, my physical and mental health has become a real problem. I have memory problems, pain, and mental health problems. When I tell staff or doctors that I am suffering, they say, ‘You look fine.’ But I am not okay. I had severe tooth pain and had to fight to get my tooth removed. Officers also threaten me, use abusive language, and call me insulting names.

I also cannot talk to my parents because I do not have money for phone calls. Sometimes I see their calls come through, and it pains me that I cannot answer."
