Demand that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) take action against local fuel cartels across Dunfermline.

Ms. Caldwell (CEO of the Competition and Markets Authority)

Residents in Dunfermline, are being unfairly charged higher fuel prices compared to nearby areas in Scotland.

For example, ASDA in Dunfermline charges 134.7p per unleaded litre, while ASDA in Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen, just 112 miles away, charges 121.7p—13p less per unleaded litre.

This price disparity is a clear example of price-fixing, with all local retailers charging nearly the same, showing a lack of true competition. This unfair pricing puts a significant strain on our wallets, especially for those like Aimee, a young apprentice, who is forced to spend an extra £20 a month just to fuel her car. With no reliable public transport options in many areas, residents are left with no choice but to pay these inflated prices.

We call on the CMA to take immediate action to end this price clustering and ensure fair, transparent, and competitive fuel pricing in Dunfermline.

Dear Ms. Caldwell (CEO of the Competition and Markets Authority)

Re: Petition Request for Local Fuel Price Analysis in Dunfermline

I am writing to you as a concerned residents of Dunfermline, a community currently facing an ongoing issue with inflated fuel prices. As part of our petition, we respectfully request that the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) conduct a thorough and immediate analysis of the fuel prices in Dunfermline and the surrounding areas to investigate whether price-fixing or anti-competitive practices are at play.

A striking example of this issue is the price disparity between ASDA in Dunfermline and other nearby areas. Currently, ASDA in Dunfermline charges 134.7p per litre for unleaded petrol, while ASDA in Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen, just 112 miles away, charges 121.7p—13p less per litre. This price difference is not unique to ASDA alone but is observed across various retailers in the area, suggesting a pattern of price clustering that indicates a lack of genuine competition.

The impact on local residents, particularly those like Aimee, a young apprentice, who is forced to spend an extra £20 a month on fuel due to these inflated prices, is undeniable. The absence of reliable and affordable public transport options in many areas forces residents to rely on their cars, leaving them with no alternative but to pay these unjust prices.

Given that fuel is a necessary commodity, we believe this situation undermines fair competition and places undue financial strain on hardworking individuals and families in our community. We strongly feel that the CMA should take action to ensure that fuel prices are fair, transparent, and competitive in Dunfermline, as they are elsewhere in Scotland.

We respectfully urge the CMA to conduct a local investigation into this matter and to implement measures that will protect consumers from price-fixing and promote healthy competition in the fuel market.

We look forward to your response and hope for swift action to address these concerns.

Kind regards,

The concerned residents of Dunfermline
