Full Public Process for Name or Landmark Change

Provincial and Municipal Governments

This Petition is organized by the Citizens Historical Education Society (CHES), a nonprofit society that encourages citizens to learn their history and respects the people who dedicated themselves to public service.

There is a growing movement to change the names of our streets, parks and schools and remove landmarks often because people of our history did or said something that offends contemporary values.

Presentism is judging the past with the values of the present. CHES rejects presentism and seeks to understand the historical forces that led to the outstanding society that we enjoy today. CHES also supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s rejection of name changes and landmark removal. Unless citizens join together and express their opinions this will continue.

Please sign the following petition that insists on full public processes before any decisions are made. You will be kept up-to-date on any new developments.

Please help us by donating to the legal, advocacy and social media costs.

I support the end of changes of names or removal of landmarks until there has been a full public process.

I reject Presentism in which historical people are judged by the values of the present. I support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its rejection of name changes and landmark removals because they are counterproductive to Reconciliation.

I want to be kept updated on the status of this petition.
