Gavin Williamson: Deliver justice for students!

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson

Enough is enough. We demand justice for students!

Across the country, hundreds of thousands of students are being treated as cash-cows, milked through rip off rents and tuition fees. But this stops now!

Students are rightly rising up, coordinating the largest wave of rent strikes for decades - and we’re already seeing results! From Warwick to Bristol, rent waivers and reductions have already been won and this is thanks to the collective power of the student movement.

But there is so much more that needs to be done.

Sign the petition to call on Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson to deliver justice for students across the country!

We demand:

  1. Rent rebates now
Students should receive full rent rebates on accommodation that they can’t use.
  2. No detriment to students affected by Covid-19 restrictions
All taught students to be offered the opportunity to redo the 2020/21 academic year with no costs, and all postgraduate research students to be offered a minimum of six months funded extensions.

  3. Protect the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff
The government must guarantee adequate mental health support to all staff and students facing difficulty through the crisis.

  4. Full living grants for all students
Full living grants must be made immediately available to all current students (regardless of any other support received from Student Finance), providing them with the means to cover a decent standard of living.

  5. Free education and write off student debt
Education is a right and should be free and accessible to all. The marketisation of our education system has produced crisis after crisis and we refuse to let it continue.

  6. Bail out our universities and colleges
The UK government must deliver a no-strings attached, immediate financial bailout to ensure our universities and colleges have autonomy and financial stability through the crisis.
