Geelong - Support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Mayor of Geelong and Geelong City Councillors

This open letter has been created by Geelong locals, to encourage the Geelong City Council to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and join the ICAN Cities Appeal.

In 2017, 122 nations voted to adopt the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. On January 22, 2021 this Treaty became permanent international law. Sadly, Australia is yet to sign and ratify this landmark Treaty.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons ‘Cities Appeal’ provides the opportunity for cities and towns across Australia to declare their support for the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and call on our leaders in the federal parliament to sign and ratify it without delay.

To the Mayor and Councillors of Geelong City Council

The following Geelong residents and petitioners request that Geelong join 38 Australian cities and towns expressing their support for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons as an urgent humanitarian imperative.

We urge the Geelong City Council to endorse the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons ‘Cities Appeal’, which reads:

"Our city/town is deeply concerned about the grave threat that nuclear weapons pose to communities throughout the world. We firmly believe that our residents have the right to live in a world free from this threat. Any use of nuclear weapons, whether deliberate or accidental, would have catastrophic, far-reaching and long-lasting consequences for people and the environment.

Therefore, we warmly welcome the adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons by the United Nations in 2017, and we call on our national government to sign and ratify it without delay."

We request that Council endorse the ICAN Cities Appeal at an upcoming council meeting.
