Gov. Hobbs: Let's Remove the Confederate Monuments in Arizona
Katie Hobbs, Governor of Arizona
Although former Gov. Doug Ducey ordered the removal of some Confederate monuments in Arizona back in 2020, at least one still remains at the Arizona Dept. of Veterans Services cemetery in Sierra Vista.
In 2020, then-Secretary of State Hobbs asked Arizona Dept. of Administration Director Andy Tobin to remove the Confederate monuments in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza. Now, Gov. Hobbs should act to remove every Confederate monument on state property in Arizona.

Dear Gov. Hobbs
We are calling on you to order the removal of all Confederate monuments on state property in Arizona. As veterans of the Armed Forces, we swore oaths to defend the Constitution, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And make no mistake, the Confederate soldiers honored by these monuments were domestic enemies of the Constitution.
These monuments dishonor the American soldiers who fought to both preserve the union and against the enslavement and trafficking of human beings. For the State of Arizona to allow monuments to the Confederacy is a direct insult to those who have sacrificed their time, bodies, and lives for freedom and democracy.
You have the opportunity to do something special and important early in your term as Governor. By listening to Arizona's veterans and removing these Confederate monuments, you can send a strong message: Arizona supports its Black community members and opposes monuments and memorials to those who fought to enslave other human beings.
Thank you,
Arizona's Veterans
