Tell the Next NYC Mayor: Invest in Green Healthy Schools!

The next mayor of NYC

NYC public schools are suffocating our kids. The greatest city in the world is running 75+ year old school buildings that are too hot, too cold, and plagued with mold, leaks, asbestos, and poor ventilation. Rising temperatures and extreme weather are making this crisis worse, and schools are harming our health and our education, most of all in disadvantaged communities. With federal cuts threatening the future of our planet, it’s time for New York to deliver our own solutions.

We want Green, Healthy Schools! By investing in green upgrades for NYC public schools, we can lead the nation and create thousands of green union jobs, improve student performance, and delivering thriving communities, because students, teachers, and school workers deserve schools where they can work and learn safely.

Join the Climate Works for All coalition and sign the petition to tell our next mayor: we need Green, Healthy Schools to ensure the future of New York City’s climate, children, education system, and workforce.

Dear Mayor,

Our public schools are in bad shape. School buildings are deteriorating, with many over 75 years old and plagued with mold, asbestos, leaks, and poor ventilation and HVAC — and they're creating 1/3 of the city’s building pollution. Schools in underserved environmental justice communities, typically concentrated in the outer boroughs, face the effects of both neglect and climate change, as rising temperatures, flooding, and poor air quality become a regular feature.

Every day, 1 million public school students are inhaling these toxins, trying to learn and play in stuffy classrooms and overheated gymnasiums. The conditions are no different for the 150,000+ teachers and school workers who make our schools run. Schools should be green, safe havens for our communities, not harmful public health liabilities.

The solution is Green, Healthy Schools. NYC should invest in green upgrades for public schools like solar power installation, replacing insulation to improve energy efficiency, installing solar power on school rooftops, and upgrading ventilation, heating, and cooling. These upgrades can create thousands of green union jobs, slash the city’s energy costs long-term, and deliver clean air, quality education, and thriving communities for all New Yorkers.
