Dear President Biden,
It’s been 125 days.
We, as alumni, students, staff, and faculty of Harvard University, and as concerned global citizens, call for an immediate ceasefire to end the relentless violence in Gaza and the West Bank. Over the past weeks, events in Israel and the Palestinian Territories have left us profoundly shocked, saddened, and feeling helpless.
As concerned humanitarians, we deeply empathize with the trauma and pain experienced on October 7 by the Israeli and broader Jewish communities. We condemn Hamas’s attacks and call for the immediate release of all hostages. Simultaneously, we deeply empathize with the suffering of the Palestinian people during decades of occupation in the Palestinian Territories and during the ongoing siege and bombardment of Gaza and attacks on civilians in the West Bank. We condemn Israel’s continued military operations in these areas.
As affiliates of one of the world’s most influential universities, we assert our ability to hold both views. We are witnesses to a situation where civilians are bearing the brunt of the attacks, with the United States government supplying weapons of war inflicting massive destruction without publicly established and enforced red lines. Our stance is rooted in a commitment to humanity, calling for the protection of all innocent lives caught in the brutality of war. We must call for peace when peace is possible.
We urgently call for an end to the bloodshed and for a negotiated settlement that will allow for effective humanitarian interventions in Gaza.
World events tend to move swiftly and often feel out of our hands. However, even in a war mired in complexity, some things are quite simple: the continued Israeli aggression in Gaza is causing irreparable harm not only to innocent Palestinian lives, but to the prospects of any peace in the future. Continued military operations in Gaza – with no clear metrics for success – will further destabilize the region, causing more resentment towards the Israeli government and perpetuating more suffering on both sides.
Moreover, the continuation of violence jeopardizes the standing of the United States in the world. Without a permanent ceasefire, the United States risks condoning aggression that violates international law and its own laws of war. The U.S. will lose the moral standing it needs to stand up to aggression in conflicts such as Ukraine.
The U.S.’s current policies also undermine a fundamental tenet of American democracy: safety. Direct and indirect support of Israeli military actions, coupled with silence on the continued killing of civilians, fosters resentment globally and compromises the world position of the United States.
Our request is simple: call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to mitigate human suffering and work towards a diplomatic solution. The U.S. administration must help break the cycle of violence while respecting the dignity and humanity of both Israelis and Palestinians.
Only through such decisive action can we hope to bring home the hostages unlawfully held by Hamas and the Palestinian prisoners unlawfully held by Israel.
As we reflect on these 125 days of trauma, the urgency for resolution becomes more pressing. To break the cycle of violence, the United States must pursue a policy of no occupation and support Palestinian self-determination.
In this historic moment, we implore the United States, as a global leader, to wield its influence with compassion and urgency to mitigate this grave humanitarian crisis, align our actions with our moral values, and promote enduring peace.
Sincerely,
Harvard Affiliates
