Help fight corruption in Australia’s mining, oil and gas sector

The Honourable Minister for Resources Ms Madeleine King MP, The Honourable Minister for Financial Services Mr Stephen Jones MP

Sign the petition to demand the Australian government fights corruption in the mining, oil and gas sector and commits to a just energy transition.

Australia is a resources giant with more than 700 ASX-listed mining, oil and gas companies operating in 106 countries globally. Yet Australia’s resources sector is a minnow when it comes to transparency and fighting corruption.

Corruption and secret deals hurt communities and our climate

Women, children and First Nations peoples all suffer from less government spending on hospitals, schools and responding to bushfires and floods. Corruption in the resources sector can also harm our environment and contribute to global heating.

The Australian government is out of step on tackling corruption and transparency

The EU, UK, Canada, Indonesia and many other countries are embracing transparency. Yet the federal government is yet to commit Australia to the gold standard of transparency for our resources sector.

Voters want integrity, good governance and action on climate issues. Big mining companies value transparency as it helps them demonstrate their economic contribution.

Dear Ministers,

It's in Australia national interest to have the highest standards of transparency, integrity and accountability for our resources sector. This will reduce corruption risks, promote good governance and help ensure a just transition in Australia. To increase standards of transparency, we call on the Australian government to:

1. Join 56 other resource rich countries including Germany, UK and Norway and implement the Extractive industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

2. Require ASX listed mining, oil and gas companies to annually disclose their project level taxes, royalty and other revenue payments in countries they do business in. These laws already exist in the 27 EU nations, Canada, UK and soon the US.

3. Introduce laws that require companies to disclose the climate-associated risks and impacts of their ongoing and future projects.

This will bring mining, oil and gas project revenues, contracts and ownership information into the public domain.

Many other countries are embracing transparency. Voters want integrity and good governance, as well as a clear response to issues of climate change. Big mining companies value transparency as it helps them demonstrate their economic contribution.

Please show your leadership and make Australia become a leader in combatting corruption at home and overseas, and committing to a just transition.
