Akron Fights for Trans Rights: Help make Akron a Trans Sanctuary City!

Akron City Council

Have you noticed the far-right attacks on the LGBTQ+ community? The trans community has had direct attacks from Ohio’s Legislature through anti-trans bills passed this year. Akron DSA wants to lead the fight against these efforts to make the city of Akron a safe space from these attacks!

We have prepared a resolution for Akron to become a Trans Sanctuary City. This legislation will protect trans individuals from attacks on the basis of them seeking or receiving gender affirming care. In the event that it is unlawful for the City to outright deny these attacks, the enforcement will become the lowest priority within the city.

The city of Akron has declared itself an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, but it should be doing more to protect trans individuals. Right now, trans individuals are being harassed and endangered by the far-right across the country, including by elected politicians in the Ohio statehouse.

We call upon Akron City Council to pass a resolution cementing the following protections in the city:

-- No city penalties for an individual who is seeking or receiving gender-affirming healthcare, or anyone assisting said individual.

-- Preventing any enforcement of penalties, criminal or otherwise, against said individuals.

-- Declining any attempt to arrest said individuals.

-- Preventing the collection of information for other jurisdictions on trans individuals where that information is used to inflict penalties.

-- Prevent carrying out the judgments of other jurisdictions to the extent that these judgments are solely related to receiving gender-affirming care.

-- Preventing the collection of assigned sex at birth for trans individuals unless for the purposes of necessary healthcare.
