Hold a Referendum on any Norfolk County Deal
Norfolk County Council
A county deal has been agreed between the government and a handful of Conservative county councillors. The people of Norfolk have had no say on whether this deal is right for them, even though it represents the county’s biggest democratic change in a lifetime. It is not acceptable that the deal has been negotiated without input from the general public.

Conservative councillors at Norfolk County Council have negotiated a deal with central government to concentrate power into the hands of a directly-elected county council leader. The public have not had any opportunity to express views regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the deal. We have had no direct say over county deal discussions, no opportunity to provide their views and no opportunity to scrutinise the proposals. Norfolk residents have not had the opportunity to say what type of deal, if any, would be right for them.
While there are some potential benefits to devolution, including greater control over public transport, there are risks in concentrating more power in the hands of a single county council leader.
The decision over the political future of Norfolk should not be made by a handful of county councillors from a single political party and with no input from other parties or the people of Norfolk. District council leaders and members of all political parties have expressed concerns about the proposed deal.
We ask Norfolk County Council to conduct a county-wide referendum asking residents of Norfolk whether or not they agree to accept the county deal which has been agreed between the Government and Norfolk County Council.
