As a college student, I am urging the Florida Senate and House of Representatives to create and support legislation that prevents federal immigration enforcement agencies, such as ICE, from operating near or on college campuses in ways that threaten student safety and well-being. Colleges and universities should remain spaces dedicated to education, opportunity, and personal growth, not environments where students fear intimidation or surveillance.
The growing presence of divisive policies and enforcement actions near campuses creates fear and uncertainty for many students, especially those from immigrant families and diverse communities. Even students who are not directly affected may feel anxious seeing their peers worried about attending class, participating in campus events, or accessing university resources. This type of environment negatively impacts academic success, mental health, and the sense of community that colleges work to build.
I strongly believe Florida lawmakers should introduce and pass legislation that establishes protections for students by limiting ICE activity near higher education institutions. A bill like this would help ensure that campuses remain safe and welcoming places where students can focus on their education rather than fear for their safety or the safety of their classmates and families. Protecting students should be prioritized over policies that create division and distrust within educational spaces.
As a student, I value being part of a campus community where people from different backgrounds can learn, grow, and feel secure. Creating legislation to protect students from unnecessary fear and intimidation would demonstrate Florida’s commitment to supporting higher education and student well-being.
I respectfully ask that you support the development and passage of legislation that protects college campuses from harmful enforcement practices and preserves them as safe environments for all students.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
