ICE OUT PETITION: OU, PROTECT STUDENTS

Ohio University President Lori Gonzales, Relevant parties

Students at Ohio University will walk out simultaneously in solidarity with students and communities under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) militarized occupation of Minneapolis. This walkout responds to a national call to action from communities resisting ICE presence there, and will occur simultaneously with other national actions in solidarity with the general strike and Day of Truth and Freedom. Despite recent arrests of anti-ICE protesters at The Ohio State University, students at Ohio University are undeterred, meeting the moment to stand with Minneapolis and against ICE’s disgusting terror of our nation’s cities and campuses.

As we campaign this spring, we demand that our universities take action to prevent these tragedies before they happen – we demand that our students are kept safe from ICE on our terms. All people should be free from fear, and our administrators are responsible for keeping students safe from ICE. We keep us safe.

We demand the following from Ohio University:
  1. Inform the public of the policy of Ohio University towards ICE either through email or a website page.
  2. Publicly state ICE is not welcome on campus.
  3. Refuse all data sharing with ICE that is not legally mandated, protect private information of students and staff to the fullest extent of the law.
  4. Treat the presence of ICE on campus as a CRITICAL emergency, where all students will receive an OHIO Alert emergency alert through the established system.
  5. Deny ICE entry to campus buildings.
  6. Refuse to sign the 287(g) agreement.
This action is part of a nationwide strike to protect our neighbors and oppose authoritarianism. We call all students to sign the petition against ICE in Athens and on campus. At Ohio University, we refuse to stand by as our peers are threatened

The Ohio Student Association chapter at Ohio University stands strong in its opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and their presence in Ohio. Beginning with a student walk-out on January 23, we will be collecting signatures of those who stand in solidarity with Minneapolis’s general strike, urging OU to protect students from ICE. This follows ICE’s murder of Renee Good, occupation of Minneapolis, and arrest of student anti-ICE protesters at the Ohio State University on Tuesday, January 20th. Students have seen a lack of transparency from President Lori Gonzalez and the Ohio University Board of Trustees related to ICE activity on campus.
