Lawsuit settlements and legal payouts tied to police misconduct are frequently covered by our tax dollars, contributing to a budget crisis in our city and county. The result? Mass layoffs and devastating cuts to vital public services like housing, education, and healthcare.

Meanwhile, reports continue to reveal that ICE detainees are being held without due process or access to legal counsel, and basic needs, clear violations of human and constitutional rights.

We the VOTERS, the undersigned residents, students, workers, and members of the greater Los Angeles community, stand united in demanding transparency, accountability, and justice from our state, county, and local leaders in response to the recent acts of violence and aggression by law enforcement toward our immigrant communities, peaceful protestors, and journalists covering demonstrations on the ground.

Public Accountability:
We demand that the State legislators, City Council and Board of Supervisors publicly disclose the actions being taken to investigate and discipline law enforcement officers who unlawfully detain, harass, or harm community members, peaceful demonstrators, and members of the press.

Transparent Oversight:
Provide clear, regular, and public reports detailing what the City Council and Board of Supervisors are doing to ensure compliance with constitutional protections, particularly around the First Amendment rights to peaceful assembly and press freedom.

Protect Press Freedom and Journalistic Rights:
Expand and enforce legal protections for journalists, photojournalists, and legal observers covering protests and documenting police activity. The right to record and report on public officials, including law enforcement, is essential to transparency and democracy. Law enforcement agencies must be held accountable for interfering with or targeting members of the press.

Protect Civil Liberties:
Enforce and expand policies that protect the right to organize, protest, and report without fear of retaliation or violence. Invest in nonviolent alternatives, accountability systems, and public education around protest rights.

Hold Federal Law Enforcement Accountable:
Investigate the actions of federal agents, including ICE, operating in our communities and demand full transparency and accountability for any civil rights violations. No federal agency should be allowed to act with impunity in Los Angeles.

Ensure Due Process for All:
Guarantee that all individuals detained by ICE agents within city and county jurisdiction receive due process, including access to legal aid, interpretation services, and medical care. No one should be detained without access to legal representation or basic human rights.

We expect transparent, sustained engagement from your offices, including regular updates, clear timelines, and concrete steps toward accountability and reform. Our communities deserve leadership that listens, acts, and follows through.
