Keep Pennsylvania’s Streets Human—Stop Driverless Cars in Philadelphia and Beyond

PA Governor Josh Shapiro, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Pennsylvania General Assembly, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Philadelphia City Council

Waymo has begun testing a fleet of autonomous vehicles in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and we have to stop them before it's too late.

These vehicles are currently in the testing phase, but the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is now considering moving them into the next stage, allowing autonomous operation with a human on board. That’s the last step before fully driverless robotaxis become a reality on our roads and start taking driver jobs. We’re asking you to sign our petition to stop them.

Autonomous vehicles are unsafe, unproven, and unwanted. We say NO.

We demand:

  • A full ban on driverless car testing and commercial operation in Pennsylvania

  • No permits for companies like Waymo to launch robotaxi services in our communities

  • Full transparency and public hearings before any pilot programs move forward

  • Investment in our public transportation and infrastructure that actually serves Pennsylvanians

  • Job protections for app-based and professional drivers whose livelihoods are under threat

We need safe streets. We need real jobs. We need transit we can count on—not more machines.

We must draw the line now.

In cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Atlanta, Waymo vehicles have already blocked ambulances, jammed traffic, and confused pedestrians and cyclists. They’ve caused chaos, and they’re being allowed to expand anyway. This reckless technology also threatens hundreds of thousands of rideshare and for-hire vehicle drivers whose jobs are on the line, including here in Pennsylvania.

To make matters worse, this comes as SEPTA and Pittsburgh Regional Transit prepare for devastating service cuts and fare hikes that will leave working families stranded. Instead of investing in safe, reliable transit and good jobs, our government is entertaining dangerous tech experiments pushed by billion-dollar companies.

Sign the petition now. Tell our leaders: Protect our streets. Protect our jobs. Say NO to driverless cars.

We, the undersigned, are calling on Pennsylvania and Philadelphia officials to immediately halt the testing and proposed rollout of autonomous vehicles in our communities.

We urge PennDOT to reject Waymo’s application for a certification that would allow for the next stage of testing and bring unproven, dangerous, and job-displacing technology to our roads.

In major cities across the country, residents have already experienced the consequences of autonomous vehicles on their streets:

- Cars that have stopped in intersections or failed in traffic
- First responders blocked during emergencies
- Thousands of jobs lost, replaced by machines

Pennsylvanians want safe streets, good jobs, and responsible public policy, not tech experiments with no public input or oversight.

We demand:

- A full ban on driverless car testing and commercial operation in Pennsylvania
- No permits issued to companies like Waymo to launch robotaxi services in our cities and towns
- Full transparency and public hearings before any pilot programs advance
- A reinvestment in SEPTA and other critical infrastructure that actually serves Pennsylvanians
- Protections from job displacement for app-based workers and professional drivers whose livelihoods are under threat

We urge our city and state leaders to prioritize investments in public transportation and worker protections, not reckless technology that takes money OUT of our state and gives it to Silicon Valley.

Pennsylvania must act now to protect our safety, our livelihoods, and the future of our communities.

Thank you.
