Keep Skating...Durham!

Durham Parks and Recreation

Wheels Fun Park has been a staple in the Durham community for over 40 years. Its skate rink provided entertainment and a safe space for children to have fun all year long. From birthday celebrations, school fundraisers to summer camps, teen events and even entertainment for adults, people of Durham especially the Black and Brown communities share many historical memories of skating that date back to the 1970s. For many Durham youth, Wheels was a safe space keeping them out of trouble and providing a place to let their hair down, mingle with friends and enjoy great music and food.

"Wheels was my outlet, when I needed to clear my head, I went to Wheels, threw on my skates, turned up my earphones and glided around the rink for hours." ~Kris (Fayetteville St. Youth Leader)

The Fayetteville Street Youth Leadership Team has launched Keep the Skating...Durham! petition demanding Durham Parks and Recreation to keep the skate rink as an addition to the Hoover Road Aquatics Center. This will provide a wide array of community recreation and sports to Hoover Road Aquatics Center and Athletic Park for all ages and demographics of Durham and surrounding areas.

If you want Durham Parks and Recreation to keep Wheels Skate Rink in the plans for Hoover Road Aquatics & Athletic Park.
