Labcorp Petition

Adam Schechter, CEO | Labcorp

Labcorp is a for-profit healthcare corporation that has taken over laboratory services in nonprofit health systems across Portland and the country. In Oregon, their acquisition of labs in the Legacy and Providence systems has fundamentally reshaped the diagnostic services that drive the majority of healthcare decisions. Patients and staff alike are experiencing the consequences: inadequate care, incorrect test results, overbilling, chronic understaffing, and unsustainable workloads for the lab professionals who make this system function.

When a corporation undermines the quality and reliability of our diagnostic system, the impact ripples throughout the entire healthcare landscape—every hospital, clinic, provider, and patient is affected. That is why our community in Oregon and Southwest Washington is calling on Labcorp to do better: to respect healthcare workers, uphold high professional standards, and provide safe, dependable care for everyone they serve.

If you care about healthcare justice and a stronger future for patient care, please sign this petition and tell Labcorp that lowering standards and putting profit over people is unacceptable.

I am joining Portland’s healthcare justice community in calling on Labcorp to end its assault on our region’s care system and provide healthcare professionals what they need to provide adequate patient care.

Labcorp’s current staffing practices, workload expectations, and operational decisions have resulted in delays, errors, and strained working conditions that put patient care at risk. The laboratory professionals who perform this critical work deserve a safe and sustainable environment where they can uphold the high standards their professions require. Patients deserve timely, accurate, and reliable diagnostic services—without the fear of overbilling, inadequate staffing, or preventable mistakes.

To protect our community’s health, we demand that Labcorp:

End chronic understaffing and provide adequate staffing levels to ensure safe, timely, and accurate diagnostic services.

Respect the expertise of laboratory professionals by involving them directly in decisions that impact their work, workloads, and patient care.

Adopt transparent quality and safety standards, and ensure that the lab is run in a professional way that ensures samples are protected and tests are accurate.

Prioritize patient care over corporate profit, including ending harmful cost-cutting measures that jeopardize accuracy and safety.

Engage in good-faith negotiations with the workers who are fighting to secure a fair contract and maintain high standards in our region’s laboratories. This includes agreeing to living wages, dependable healthcare, and a union contract that honors their centrality in our care model.

Our healthcare system depends on trustworthy diagnostics, skilled professionals, and ethical decision-making. We call on Labcorp to take responsibility, repair the damage being done, and commit to a model of care that puts patients and workers first.

We urge Labcorp to act now. Our community’s health depends on it.
