Let's end right-wing extremism

Minister for Home Affairs Clare O’Neil

Our communities are under attack, again. We all want to live in peace and safety, but right-wing extremists and Neo-Nazis are putting us all at risk.[1] Glorifying fascism and violence, inciting hatred, and promoting racism and white supremacy is a deliberate attempt to marginalise, discriminate against and target our communities. This is not something that can be ignored. Left unchecked these groups will spread their insidious xenophobic and exclusionary ideology, radicalising others at the risk of every one of us.

We won’t put up with this. We know that our communities are strongest when we are united. Together, we have spent decades fighting for our rights in the face of oppressive bigots. We have won before and we will not let this latest wave of violent scare tactics intimidate us.

That’s why we are calling on the Albanese government to call these groups what they are, terrorist organisations. It is important that the government not only condemns these groups, but takes action to make membership, funding of, and involvement in these groups a criminal offence.[2]

Right now, the government lists only three far-right groups as terrorist organisations. None of these groups are based in Australia.[3] This is despite the Director-General of ASIO reporting an annual increase in the threat from right-wing extremists since 2019.[4] These groups are organised and exist to incite hatred, promote racism and reinforce a white supremacist ideology. They have no place in our society and should be treated as the real and present danger that they are.

We know that when individuals and allies unite as a community, we can end this hatred that directly targets us. We cannot let people in power ignore this threat and expect it to go away. By acting in solidarity with each other and using our collective power we can put an end to these hate groups.

Democracy in Colour will make sure that the Minister gets your message.

We urgently call for Minister Claire O'Neil to take action and stop the growth of right-wing extremist groups in Australia.

The targeting of Transgender people by Neo-Nazis in Melbourne, violent attack LGBTQI+ people in South-West Sydney and the recent Neo-Nazi rally targeting migrants are only the latest examples of this increasing threat to our communities. Left unchecked, these groups risk radicalising others with their hatred and xenophobia.

Please help us create a society where we can live in peace and safety by expanding the legislative criteria of terrorist organisations to include these groups that exist to promote white supremacy, xenophobia, and incite hatred. These groups pose a real and current threat to our communities and risk inciting lone actors to enact their dangerous ideologies.
