Liberty Mutual, End Your Support of TC Energy & Meet with Tribal Leaders

David Long, CEO, Liberty Mutual Insurance

Indigenous leaders from across Turtle Island aka North America are demanding Liberty Mutual to stop supporting the Keystone XL pipeline (KXL) because their communities will be directly impacted by the pipeline. For a decade Indigenous communities have fought to stop KXL and have won thus far. And now despite local, national and international opposition, Trump is trying to force construction to happen immediately.

And Liberty Mutual Insurance is implicated!

Liberty Mutual is providing key financial coverage to TC Energy to build the Keystone XL pipeline via a $15.6 million bond to cover risks related to the pre-construction of the project through South Dakota. TC Energy is expecting for Liberty Mutual to provide a second bond once primary construction begins.

KXL poses a critical threat to waterways, farmlands, Indigenous nations and the climate.  Tribal nations have rejected consent for the project, citing not only environmental concerns but the increased risks of sexual violence perpetrated by transient pipeline workers.

So why is Liberty Mutual supporting this?

Stand with us, DEMAND LIBERTY MUTUAL DROP KXL AND MEET WITH INDIGENOUS LEADERS!

Dear Mr. Long,

I am writing to you to stand with the Oceti Sakowin leaders in asking that Liberty Mutual end its business relationship with the TC Energy Corporation based in Calgary, Canada. TC Energy’s application for Keystone XL (KXL) certification to the state of South Dakota confirms that Liberty Mutual Insurance has issued a surety bond for the tar sands pipeline project.

The KXL pipeline will directly impact the treaty rights, cultural resources, natural resources, and water rights of tribal nations along its route. As such, this tar sands pipeline, and by extension Liberty Mutual's business relationship with Keystone XL, is a threat to Indigenous land and the people who depend on it.

Lastly, the KXL pipeline and the continued development of the Alberta tar sands will not only greatly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, but it will also further Indigenous Rights violations of Dene, Cree, and Metis first nations in northern Alberta. Both of these issues cannot be ignored nor understated.

Given the stated grievances, I strongly urge Liberty Mutual Insurance to immediately end its relationship with the KXL pipeline project. I further request that you meet with Indigenous leaders to discuss Liberty Mutual Insurance’s relationship with the tar sands sector overall.

Sincerely,
