Make Climate Education Required in Washington Schools!
Washington State Representatives and Senators
With recent climate data from the IPCC report raising urgency and widening the scope of climate change, it is clear that we need to take bold, swift action to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Ensuring climate education for grades K-12 is vital because it serves numerous purposes and has far-reaching benefits. It instills civic responsibility within students and provides the requisite knowledge and skills for the student engagement necessary in addressing climate change.
Mandatory climate education is becoming increasingly popular around the globe. Cities in states like Oregon and New Jersey, and countries like Italy and New Zealand now require schools to provide students with climate education. It is vital that schools in Washington continue to build up this momentum because the numbers are clear: over 66% of U.S. adults believe that climate change should be taught in schools - with clear bipartisan approval from 66% of Republicans and 90% of Democrats in the U.S.
The next generation must be prepared for the climate issues they will face in their lifetime, and the only way to ensure that is through comprehensive climate education. We simply cannot leave our children in the dark about the reality of the climate crisis. We owe this to them, and we have no time to spare.
Please pass policies that mandate comprehensive climate education!
