Make Polluters Pay

Santa Monica City Council, Los Angeles City Council, neighboring City Councils of Los Angeles County, and City Councils throughout California

Palisades Charter High School environmental science students in February  2025,
three months after the Palisades Fire destroyed their town.

On November 14th, the youth of Los Angeles, primarily from the Santa Monica and Palisades regions, gathered on the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica to protest for their safety.

Introduced after Los Angeles' devastating fires, which displaced thousands, killed 31 and cost over $250 billion, the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act (AB 1243/SB 684) (https://sd20.senate.ca.gov/news/senator-menjivar-and-assemblymember-addis-author-sb-684-ab-1243-polluters-pay-climate) would ensure California has the resources to protect our communities from climate hazards, accelerate the renewable energy transition and fund a better future.
In short, "Make polluters pay" is a principle and movement advocating that those who cause pollution be responsible for the costs of the damage they cause. The goal is to shift financial responsibility from taxpayers and communities to the large corporations who are directly responsible for these tragedies.
