Make Polluters Pay for Rising Insurance Costs
California Legislature
As extreme weather events like wildfires and floods become more destructive and frequent, insurance premiums are spiking across California. This growing insurance affordability crisis is leaving homeowners, renters, and small businesses struggling to pay their bills. Some insurance companies are even dropping customers and refusing to issue new policies in communities that are at high risk of wildfires, hurricanes, and floods and sea level rise.
These rising insurance costs and losses are currently being shouldered by policyholders who did not cause this crisis. Oil companies knew decades ago that their products would make fires, floods and storms worse. But rather than change course, companies engaged in a decades-long campaign to deceive the public about the reality of climate change and their products’ contribution to the problem — in order to keep the world hooked on fossil fuels.
Instead of everyday Californians bearing sole responsibility for these costs, the multi-million dollar corporations who helped cause this destruction should pay.

When you make a mess, you clean it up. Right now, Californians are being asked to shoulder the growing costs of extreme weather disasters that Big Oil knowingly made worse. It’s only fair that the companies that knowingly got us into this mess share the financial consequences of their actions.
Californians should not be forced to pay more for home insurance due to fossil fuel-driven extreme weather disasters, while the companies that caused the problem — and lied about it — pay nothing.
Our state needs more tools to protect our homeowners and renters from higher costs stemming from extreme weather events, as President Trump guts FEMA and politicizes federal disaster aid. We urge you to show your support for making polluters pay and keeping insurance affordable for all Californians.
