Mayor Johnson and Chicago City Council: End unfair deactivations for app drivers!
Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago City Council
Join Justice for App Workers and the Machinists Union in calling on Mayor Johnson and the Chicago City Council to end unfair deactivations for rideshare drivers with the only proven solution to solve this problem!
Every day, app drivers in Chicago are at risk of losing our incomes and careers – which is why we’ve been sharing our stories about the impact unfair deactivation has on us. Just one false complaint by a passenger, and we can be locked out with the click of a button. The worst part is, we get banned from every single rideshare app at once and lose our incomes overnight, with no chance to appeal the decision. That’s why last January, we introduced an ordinance in the Chicago City Council to stop app companies from taking away drivers’ livelihoods without due process. Our ordinance would include creating a Driver Resource Center to review deactivation cases, giving reactivated drivers back pay, and implementing other initiatives to protect drivers’ livelihoods.
This is the ONLY proven model that has worked for deactivation around the country. Any half-measures will continue this troubling issue for thousands of Illinois drivers. That’s why we’re calling on Mayor Johnson and the Chicago City Council to give workers the protections we need.
All app drivers either know someone who has been unfairly deactivated, or have firsthand experience with the issue. That’s why we know just how devastating it can be to drivers and our families. Another ordinance on this issue asks riders for voluntary donations to pay for the account reactivation process, but we know that workers need a system that ensures drivers have due process, not one that relies on the goodwill of riders. Mayor Johnson has to address this problem and stop dismissing the needs of rideshare workers.
Please stand with the thousands of Chicago app drivers who work incredibly hard and deserve better working conditions. Sign our petition and support our fight for fair treatment from app companies and the city of Chicago!

All app drivers either know someone who has been unfairly deactivated, or have firsthand experience with the issue. That’s why we know just how devastating it can be to drivers and our families. Mayor Johnson and City Council: we need you to hear us, address this problem, and stop dismissing the needs of rideshare workers.
Another ordinance on this issue asks riders for voluntary donations to pay for the account reactivation process, but we know that workers need a system that ensures drivers have due process, not one that relies on the goodwill of riders. Our ordinance is unequivocally the best way forward for hard-working Chicago drivers.
Please publicly support the Worker Deactivation Rights Ordinance, #O2023-239, including the 10-cent fee on Uber and Lyft rides in Chicago. This is a small price to pay to provide job security for hard-working Chicagoans.
You have thousands of app drivers in Chicago who work incredibly hard and deserve better treatment. All we’re asking for is a guarantee that we won’t be cut off from our incomes at a moment’s notice, without a chance to appeal. Stand with your working-class constituents!
Sincerely,
Members and Supporters of Justice for App Workers
