Mets Drop Citi

Steve Cohen, Owner of the New York Mets

For nearly 20 years, Citi, one of the world's largest fossil fuel financiers, has had naming rights over the Mets' home. Citi's investment in the fossil fuel industry is contributing to sea level rise and storm surges that put New Yorkers at risk. The Met’s deal with Citi is up in 2028, and Steve Cohen has a choice. Will he allow a bank with no regard for the health and well-being of New Yorkers to be associated with the Mets, or will he stand with those who have been impacted by climate disasters like Hurricane Ida and Superstorm Sandy and find a new sponsor? Join us in asking Steve Cohen to drop Citi!

Dear Steve Cohen,

As a Mets Fan and a New Yorker I can’t stand seeing the Mets play in a stadium named after one of the largest fossil fuel funders in the world.

Citi has pumped $285 billion into the fossil fuel industry since 2016, making it the second largest financier of fossil fuels in the world. Citi is among the biggest financial backers of the world's worst polluters including ExxonMobil, BP and Saudi Aramco. Between 2016 and 2020, Citi pumped over $40 billion into companies operating in the Amazon, including where Indigenous communities are opposed to the projects.

Citi’s support for the fossil fuel industry is fueling the climate crisis. As New Yorkers we know first-hand the impacts the climate crisis is having on our city. From Superstorm Sandy to Hurricane Ida, it is working-class New Yorkers, many of them Mets fans, who are facing the brunt of this crisis. Even Citi Field, where the Mets play, is located in one of the areas most at risk for flooding and climate chaos.

Citi’s blatant disregard for the wellbeing of our planet and city of New York should disqualify them from naming rights to the home of the Mets.

Sincerely,
