Over 230,000 households lost power over the peak of Winter Storm Fern (Jan 24-25) in the Metro Nashville area (Davidson County). That is nearly half of the customers of Nashville Electric Service (NES). It is Tuesday, January 27, and nearly 140,000 households still lack power, while the temperature outside is in the single digits.

Nashville had plenty of time to prepare for the storm, as much as other parts of Tennessee, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. However, every other area except Nashville was prepared for the crisis. While there are multiple areas in which Nashville was extremely unprepared, the most outrageous example was the shockingly disproportionate number of linemen.

Nashville Electric Service started with 150 linemen on Sunday (for 230,000 households), more than 1,500 households per lineman. By mid-Monday, it had increased the number of linemen to 300, then to 500. Today (Tuesday, Jan 27), there are a little over 700 linemen attempting to fix hundreds of broken poles. Everywhere else but Nashville had significantly more linemen to fix significantly less damage than in Nashville. For example, on Monday, Middle TN Electric had nearly 500 linemen to fix 8,000 reported outages!! Meanwhile, Nashville had 300 at the same time on Monday for 200,000. Absolutely unacceptable! You cannot expect 300-500 linemen to do the job of 10,000 linemen.

As Monday went on, testimonies from linemen started surfacing, indicating the reason for the low amount of linemen being hired. One lineman from Illinois, unionized with IBEW, mentioned on X that he and the other 18,000 linemen had just been dismissed from working in the Carolinas and offered to help Nashvillians. He claims that he and others were rejected because NES did not want to pay their wages. His claims were corroborated by numerous testimonies from traveling linemen on social media, and by linemen who had previous experience working with NES. We have collected enough testimonies and looked at enough numeric evidence to conclude that Nashville Electric Service is being cheap and letting our people die just so they can save some cash. That's how little our lives are worth to them.

But why do people say that NES is refusing to pay union wages if their lineworkers are unionized? The local NES linemen are unionized with SEIU Local 205, a union that many would describe as unqualified to represent a skilled trade to begin with. Nashville's local unions have some of the worst contracts in the country. Nashville union wages are like non-union wages anywhere else, so NES doesn't wanna pay IBEW wages from Illinois and other states with stronger labor movements. Nashville's union bureaucracy is more concerned with not upsetting their friends in local government than they are with organizing and serving their members. SEIU Local 205 is letting its members work in dangerously understaffed and underpaid conditions. SHAME ON THEM!

With such a tiny number of linemen on the ground, some neighborhoods are getting prioritized while others are being left out to freeze to death. Many rich neighborhoods, including Broadway (which was fully lit without a single person at the bars), never lost power because their power lines are underground. Mayor Freddie O'Connell is saying that they are prioritizing the neighborhoods with the most outages, but countless testimonies from the public say otherwise. His local government is prioritizing affluent areas and letting the areas where workers live last. UNACCEPTABLE LACK OF RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE!

As hundreds of thousands of our THIRD DAY without power, WE DEMAND MAYOR FREDDIE O'CONNELL AND NASHVILLE ELECTRIC SERVICE TO HIRE THE THOUSANDS OF LINEMEN THAT ARE NEEDED TO AVOID MASS CASUALTIES! ACCEPT THE HELP FROM OTHER STATES!

Every death that takes place as a result of exposure to below freezing temperatures (the inside of people's homes has reached 32-35F or lower temperatures by now) is blood that you have on your hands.

Los sindicatos locales de Nashville tienen algunos de los peores contratos del país.
