Negotiate with UCLA Lab School Demonstration Teachers Now

A petition to Darnell Hunt, UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost & Tina Christie, Dean of the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies

After months of delay and nearly 3 years without a contract, UCLA Management continues to refuse to bargain anything other than compensation. UCLA Lab School Demonstration Teachers filed Unfair Labor Practice Charges with the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB), which issued a Complaint against UC Management in September alleging the following violations of labor law:

  • Unilateral Changes to the school calendar

  • Unilateral Changes to the past practice of negotiating a comprehensive side letter

  • Per Se Refusal to Bargain

  • Failure to Bargain in Good Faith

UCLA is paying an expensive, private attorney to lead UCLA Management's team in negotiations with Demonstration Teachers. This is nearly unheard of at UC, which employs dozens of attorneys in the Office of Labor Relations. Rather than negotiate important topics like planning time and professional development funding, UCLA is paying thousands of dollars to an outside attorney to defend their illegal tactics at the bargaining table (see bullets above).

UCLA Lab School Demonstration Teachers need guaranteed planning time, professional development funding, instructional supports to meet the needs of all students, and an evaluation process based on standards for K-12 instruction.

All other K-12 schools in the UC system have full contracts. Here's an at-a-glance comparison. Why are Lab School Demonstration Teachers being denied the critical opportunity to negotiate a full contract that will support excellent instruction for our students?

We have repeatedly called on UCLA Superintendent of PreK-12 Operations, Devin Dillon, and Lab School Principal, Georgia Lazo, to change course and to negotiate in good faith. Our calls have gone unanswered.

Morale, trust, and collaboration between the Lab School Administration and Demonstration Teachers have collapsed. Immediate intervention from higher levels of the UCLA Administration is urgently needed.

We call on Darnell Hunt and Tina Christie to stop the unfair labor practices and to direct the Lab School Administration to immediately begin good faith negotiations over all mandatory subjects with Demonstration Teachers.

Please sign this petition demanding UCLA Lab School Administration return to the table and negotiate the full range of subjects in good faith.
