Our community stands with NMC nurses!
Jonathan Billings, Interim CEO, & all NMC management
Nurses at Northwestern Medical Center formed a union almost 11 months ago to preserve high quality patient care, ensure nurse and patient safety, and establish a competitive wage scale that will recruit and retain qualified staff. We, as community members, share their goals. We value our small community hospital, and we know that RNs are the backbone of the exceptional care we’ve come to expect at NMC. We understand the strain that hospitals are facing across Vermont, which is why we’re disappointed in management’s decisions to prioritize travel nurses contracts over a first contract for local nurses. Investing in quality RNs is a fiscally responsible decision. We hope management will recognize this reality, and present proposals which recognize the essential nature of:
- Safe staffing ratios that ensure every patient is able to receive quality care, and nurses are able to attend to their basic needs throughout the day.
- A sustainable on call system so that nurses providing critical, life saving interventions are well-rested
- A competitive starting wage that allows NMC to recruit and retain qualified nurses. The starting wage at UVM Medical Center is $10.33/hr higher than NMC, a difference of 36%.
- Policies that protect and provide care for nurses who experience violence during their shifts.
We stand in solidarity with nurses and call on Northwestern Medical Center to respect nurses and reach a fair agreement.
