Based on UIH RN’s experience with Shelly Major during her tenure, but particularly during the COVID disaster, Shelly and her management team failed not only to protect our patients and the staff, but was not able to demonstrate any level of competent leadership during these extraordinary times.

Chief Nursing Officer Shelly Major and her Management team are guilty of the following.

1. Refusal to work with UIH Illinois Nurses Association Executive Board when requested daily communication. Not until a letter was sent to UIH CEO and Chancellor did they agree to meet.
2. After receiving early notification by the University School of Public Health about the Pandemic explosion, they withheld PPE, only releasing PPE with media exposure.
3. Lack of transparency of disclosing number of positive employees with SARS-CoV-2 and thereby exposing more employees to the SARS-CoV-2 infection
4. Failure to secure several key components prior to the implementation of a team nursing model in the MSICU during the COVID disaster demonstrating her lack of experience, knowledge, and presence which was both unsafe for both the patient and the nurse given the lack of planning and adequate resources. UI Health INA Executive Board had to demand that this team nursing model stop immediately.
5. Being almost entirely inaccessible to UIH Rn’s and INA throughout the COVID crisis.
6. Lack of transparency, honesty, and integrity as a leader.
7. Failure to attend any substantive bargaining sessions.
8. Failure to provide any factual data to prove staffing based on acuity.
9. Continually giving misleading information containing half-truths and outright lies in mass emails to UIH staff.

As of Friday, September 18th, 2020, Shelly Major and her management team continue to show their lack of competency and care in their position as leaders. Their lack of support for their nurses and the patients who entrust us, is appalling.

We, the Nurses of the INA declare our complete lack of confidence or support in the CNO of UIH, Shelly Major, as well as her management team, Sheila Cook, Ruby Darlene Evans, Robin Garrett, Phyllis Grice, Tiesa Hughes-Dillard, Rani Morrison, Doreen Norris-Stojak, Lisa Potts, and Jill Stemmerman in the strongest possible terms.

This is a petition for the ‘Vote of No Confidence’ in the above named, and their ability to oversee and coordinate the department of nursing for UIH and its daily operation.

We strongly urge UIH to demand for the immediate resignation of Shelly Major and her management team.
