No Cumberland Gas Plant!

Cumberland County Board of Supervisors

Dominion Energy is proposing the largest gas plant it has ever built in Virginia. The Cumberland Energy Center would be nearly double the size of any existing Dominion gas plant in the state, sprawling across 900 acres on the James River in Cumberland County.

This plant is designed to meet skyrocketing electricity demand driven largely by Big Tech data centers in Northern Virginia, while Cumberland residents would be left paying the costs: higher bills, industrial pollution, and decades of dependence on volatile gas prices. It is a multi-billion dollar project paid for by ratepayers like us.

Dear Cumberland Board of Supervisors,

We, the undersigned, oppose the Cumberland Gas Plant. This proposal is not right for our county.

This plant is dirty. A 3,000 megawatt methane gas facility on the James River would mean decades of air pollution, water risk, and heavy truck traffic for our community.

This plant is expensive. Dominion customers, including Cumberland residents, would pay for this infrastructure through higher utility bills, while absorbing the long-term risk of volatile gas prices.

This plant is unnecessary. Cleaner, cheaper alternatives exist. Virginia does not need another massive fossil fuel project to meet its energy needs.

This plant is unfair. Northern Virginia localities collect billions in data center tax revenue. Cumberland County gets the pollution, the industrial blight, and the higher energy bills. That is not a fair trade.

Our Comprehensive Plan reflects a community vision for responsible growth that preserves Cumberland's rural character. The Board of Supervisors is obligated to consider that vision in every zoning decision. A 3,000 megawatt methane gas plant on the James River is inconsistent with what Cumberland residents asked for.

We urge the Cumberland Board of Supervisors to deny the Cumberland Methane Gas Plant.

Sincerely,
