No ICE in Churches and Schools
Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Adam Schiff
All people, regardless of race, class, gender, or immigration status, deserve access to refuge in sacred spaces. All children, regardless of race, class, gender, or immigration status, deserve access to education without the fear of being detained, separated from their families, and deported. At GLIDE, we offer both early education and spiritual care.
Recently, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has changed it's policies to offer greater leeway for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to raid “sensitive locations,” including schools and houses of worship. In practice we have seen ICE detain immigrants regardless of their documentation status, including immigrants with active green cards.
At GLIDE, we have both a religious and a moral obligation to embrace and serve the refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants in our communities without regard to documentation or legal status. Yet this cruel policy and practice from DHS has already frightened many of our community members away from accessing our essential services.
GLIDE will not leave any of our community members unsupported. So we are calling on our elected officials to reject these unjust incursions, safeguard basic human rights, and make sure ICE stays out of our churches and schools.
