No ICE in Portland

Department of Homeland Security

Donald Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is opening an office with a detention cell in downtown Portland, Maine--one of the most important refugee resettlement communities in New England.

ICE is notorious for human rights violations, racial profiling, warrantless searches, terrorizing communities, and family separations. ICE's presence is completely incompatible with the Portland values and is sending a shock wave of fear through the thousands of immigrants who have made Portland their home.

Portland has a nationwide reputation as a welcoming community. It elected the first African-born Muslim city councilor in the state on the same day Trump was elected president. Portland has a one-of-a-kind program called the Community Support Fund that provides housing and food aid to asylum-seekers during the period when when they are not allowed to work by federal law.

Trump first attacked Portland for our pro-immigrant policies by cutting off federal funds for police training. Now he's sending his ICE agents into the heart of the city to terrorize immigrant families.
