Rhode Island Recycled Metals’ is applying for a new junk shop license. The facility has a long history of fires, environmental concerns, and repeated safety violations that have put nearby communities at risk. For years, our neighbors in South Providence have been forced to breathe the smoke, deal with the noise, and live with the risk that comes from a facility that has repeatedly failed to operate safely. Dear Members of the Providence Licenses Board,
As a Providence neighbor, I urge you to deny the junk shop license application submitted by Rhode Island Recycled Metals.
For years, the facility located on Allens Avenue has been the source of serious public safety and environmental concerns. Multiple fires have occurred at the scrapyard, including a major overnight blaze that took firefighters nearly eight hours to extinguish and sent thick black smoke across nearby neighborhoods. These incidents have raised legitimate fears among residents about air quality, environmental contamination, and the safety of surrounding communities. A Rhode Island Superior Court judge has even ruled the facility a “public nuisance” after repeated incidents.
Despite this troubling track record, Rhode Island Recycled Metals is now seeking a new junk shop license from the City of Providence. Granting this license would allow the company to expand operation despite years of incidents that have put our neighbors at risk.
The Providence Board of Licenses has a responsibility to protect the health and safety of our residents. I respectfully urge you to deny this license and put our community first.
