Stop Jailing Those Telling The Truth

UK Attorney General, Richard Hermer KC

Cressie, Daniel, Lou, Lucia and Roger have all been imprisoned after telling the truth in court.
Lucia, Cressie, Lou, Daniel and Roger before their trial.

Cressie, Daniel, Lou, Lucia and Roger (the WholeTruthFive) have been sentenced to a combined 21 years in prison, the harshest sentences for peaceful protest in UK history. Their “crime”? Participating in a Zoom call to discuss disruptive protest action against catastrophic new fossil fuel licences.

The UN has already slammed the trial for its persecution and punishment of defendants. At trial, the five weren’t allowed to defend their actions in context of the climate emergency. When they spoke the whole truth to the jury, 4 of the 5 were arrested multiple times in court and jailed.

This isn’t what a fair trial looks like. Sign the petition and demand an end to the imprisonment of peaceful protesters.

It is shocking that UK citizens accused of a crime cannot fully explain their actions in court. Historically, juries have protected democracy by refusing to convict under unjust laws. Today, these rights are being eroded—defendants are silenced, and juries are denied the full truth. We must act to restore these crucial democratic protections.

Our prisons are in crisis and police chiefs are warning that overcrowding could lead to societal breakdown, why would we lock up peaceful truth tellers? We shouldn’t be spending our taxes on locking up people like Dan, a former social worker, who has spent three months in prison without trial and separated from friends and family. His treatment has been so poor that the UN now warns the UK may have breached international law.

This is a fight against the might of the dirty fossil fuel industry and its corruption of our courts. We demand a public, transparent meeting with you in court capacity as Attorney General to discuss an end to the persecution and imprisonment of truth tellers and the current practice of courts concealing evidence from juries on climate science.
