No Utility Shut-Offs, No Rate Hikes

Carl Taylor, President and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E

We are calling on Rochester Gas & Electric to commit to a full moratorium on utility shut-offs for the duration of the crisis and the cancellation of their planned May rate hike. The proposed 30-day suspension on shut-offs is an insufficient response to the crisis.

Iberadrola, the Spanish corporation that owns Rochester Gas & Electric, posted a record profit of $3.8 billion in 2019, an increase of 13% from the previous year.

Rochester Gas & Electric should not be profiting during this crisis, especially as community members face layoffs and extended unemployment.

As families in our community face the sudden loss of jobs and income due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we urge Rochester Gas & Electric to commit to a full moratorium on utility shut-offs for the duration of this health emergency. The proposed 30-day suspension is an inadequate response to this crisis.

We also call on Rochester Gas & Electric to cancel their planned rate hike, which threatens to further jeopardize the economic security of families in our region. No company should be putting private profits before the health and safety of our community members.
